Seerestaurant im Weissen Rössl, March 2008 in St. Wolfgang, Austria

Famed for the same titled operetta, the hotel is mentioned in every touristic book about St. Wolfgang at Wolfgangsee.

On that day I was longing for a big steak, so I told them my wish. Even if this Pfeffersteak wasn’t on the menu, the kitchen at 2:00 pm still pulled off one of the best steak I’ve ever had in Austria.

*Pfeffersteak: Steak with a sauce of green pepper, white wine, and cream.
**My observation is that in Austria they produce very good quality beef, but the American style of cooking steak (grill a thick piece of beef) is somehow not as popular.

Erdbeercremeschnitte – Strawberry Cream Slice

Café Konditorei Zauner, June 2008 in Bad Ischl, Austria

The almost 200 year old Café Zauner is SO famous going without introductions. Not only for the noble ambiance , their food is extremely good. Why did I say “food” ? Because even their breakfast ham and eggs is very tasty.

But, their cremeschnitte is definitely THE best I’ve ever had in Austria. (Well, I’ve already tried cremeschnitten in quite a number of famous pastry shops and cafés in Austria.)

Cremeschnitte is a cream slice similar to the French “mille-feuille” ( a thousand layers), believed to be originally from Hungary.

*Forgive me for being so emotional in this post. I’m really crazy about this pastry shop. Being in the beautiful imperial spa town Bad Ischl, sitting in nicely preserved historical tea rooms, and enjoying delicious desserts…, what’s better than that ?

Linzer Torte

Kaffee Glockenspiel, September 2008 in Linz, Austria

The most famous cake in the city of Linz is of course the Linzer Torte, a tart made with crumbly pastry base with ground nuts and red current jam filling. It is even named the oldest-known torte or cake in the world (wikipedia).

This Linzer Torte is made by Konditorei Jindrak. Their cakes are available in many bakeries and cafés in Linz. One of them is “Kaffee Glockenspiel” on Linzer Hauptplatz ( main square).
